Yes 4 Youth Internship
ABSA Bank sponsored the YES4YOUTH Internship Program to address youth unemployment in South Africa. Coordinated by Catalyx, the program involved 120 interns recruited by UIP and deployed to various roles within the company. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the interns performed admirably and gained valuable work experience. Over 60% of the interns have secured permanent employment, demonstrating the program’s success in providing opportunities for young people.
Place Making for Vibrant Communities
Urban regeneration has become increasingly important as cities face growing social and economic pressures. To create livable, sustainable cities, it’s essential to focus on various aspects of urban regeneration, including addressing urban decline and promoting community involvement.
The Cultural Precinct in Durban is an example of placemaking, a collaborative process to shape public spaces and create vibrant communities. UIP is actively involved in the Cultural Precinct project, leveraging its expertise in urban regeneration to contribute to its success. By focusing on accessibility, comfort, and activities, placemaking can create destinations that attract people and enhance the quality of life in cities.
UIP Skills Training & Job Creation
Youth unemployment in South Africa is a significant challenge, with a high rate of 65% and limited opportunities for those with insufficient skills or experience. Many young people face poverty and struggle to find stable employment.
UIP has partnered with uMthombo Street Children to address these issues. uMthombo provides programs to help street-connected youth heal from trauma, develop life skills, and gain work experience. UIP offers internships and job placements to program participants, creating pathways to employment and improving their prospects for the future. Through this collaboration, UIP has successfully placed numerous young people in internships and helped them secure jobs, contributing to the reduction of youth unemployment in South Africa.
Graffiti Removal
Graffiti, while often viewed as art, is illegal when done without property owner consent. It can cause damage, deface property, and negatively impact property values.
In South Africa, graffiti is considered vandalism and carries penalties including fines, arrest, and jail time. To prevent graffiti, a zero-tolerance approach is crucial, with prompt removal discouraging further incidents.
The consequences of graffiti vandalism can be severe, including property repair costs, community service, and potential additional charges for possession of tools used for vandalism.
Efforts to address graffiti involve community education, enforcement of laws, and proactive measures like the graffiti clean-up teams employed by organizations like UIP. By addressing the issue comprehensively, communities can combat the negative effects of graffiti and maintain a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing environment.
